Target Hierarchy Levels Explained

Learn what each level type in a target hierarchy means and how it connects to your plan data.

Written by Micaela Rosling Caesar

When you build a target hierarchy, you choose which levels to include. Each level type determines how your targets are structured and what data from your plans is counted toward them.

Level types

Organization

Adds all your organizations to the hierarchy. This lets you set and compare targets across different organizations.

Tag category (e.g. Brand, Country, Market)

When you add a tag category as a level, all the tag values within that category are included in the hierarchy. For example, adding tag category "Country" as a level will list all your country tags (Czech Republic, Ireland, etc.) so you can set targets per country. Plans that use those tag values will pace against the corresponding target.

Media Type

Adds all your media types (e.g. OOH, Radio, Paid Social, TV) to the hierarchy. This lets you set a budget target for each media type. Plan data entered under a given media type will pace against its target.

Media Vehicle

Works the same way as Media Type, but at the media vehicle level. All your media vehicles are listed so you can set targets per vehicle.

Plan

Adds each individual plan to the hierarchy, so you can set targets per plan. Including Plan also makes the hierarchy visible directly within each plan in the Planning section.

How levels stack together

Levels are ordered from top to bottom, creating a hierarchy structure. For example, a hierarchy set up as Organization → Country → Media Type → Plan will show targets broken down first by org, then by country, then by media type, and finally by plan.

You can mix and match level types to match how your organization tracks performance. Each level can also be split by a time period (e.g. Year, Quarter, Month).
