⚠️ Limited Release:
This article describes a new version of Targets available to selected clients. Other accounts will continue to use the existing Targets setup.

About Target Hierarchies

Targets help you plan, monitor, and report performance metrics across different organizational levels. They allow you to set structured goals and track progress over time, ensuring data-driven decision-making.

In this article, we’ll cover how to create target hierarchies, the framework where you later enter your specific targets. If you’re unsure which level to create your target on, you can learn more about Target Creation Levels, Views, and Access here.

Create a Target Hierarchy

  1. Open Targets Overview: Go to the Parent or Subsidiary level. In the left menu, click Targets, then Targets Overview section (Bullseye symbol) .

  2. Start a new hierarchy: Click + Create target hierarchy in the top right.

  3. Name and color: Enter a Target Hierarchy Name and choose a color (the color helps you differentiate this target from others in the Target timeline.).

  4. Set period: Select the Target Hierarchy Period (date range).

  5. Add measures: Click Add Measure and select one or more measurable fields you want to track.

  6. Add description (optional): Describe what this hierarchy covers.

  7. Build levels: Add as many hierarchy levels as needed.

  8. Choose split: For each level, fill in Split by. Select None if you do not want a split.

    • If Plan is chosen as a hierarchy level, you cannot split by Plan. The split will default to None.

  9. Review and create: Check your setup and click Create.

💡 Two reasons to include Plan in your hierarchy

If you have Plan included in your target hierarchy:

  • The hierarchy automatically becomes visible for all plans within the target date range — no need to create separate plan targets.

  • In the Planning section, widgets will pull and display data only for the specific plan you’re viewing.

Edit an Existing Target Hierarchy

  1. Open Targets Overview: Go to Targets and open Targets Overview.

  2. Select a hierarchy: Click the three dots next to your target and select Edit.

  3. Edit setup: Use the same UI to update the name, color, period, measures, or levels.

    • This edits the hierarchy setup, not the data inside the targets.
